Easy Furniture Makeover DIY

Easy Furniture Makeover DIY

The vintage bookshelf was painted this kind of icky yellow years ago when we used it in a playroom.  It received a good bit of wear and tear so it was definitely in the need of a makeover!

My plan was to bring the bookshelf into my husband’s office to corral some of his papers and bring a bit of balance to that side of his office.

I definitely think it was a great transformation. Before the bookshelf might have seemed a bit juvenile but now it just looks distinguished and the dark color highlights the great details.

I already own a spray shelter and it was the perfect way to paint the bookcase. It did a fantastic job of keeping the overspray contained and off of my house!

The bookcase just fit in there so, when I was ready to paint the top, I just pushed the tent back a little. Just enough to still capture the overspray.
Using the Homeright Finish Max was the definitely the right tool for this job. The spray on this was nothing short of perfection.
I knew from the moment I sprayed a test spot it was going to be a quick and easy project.

The paint I used for this project was from Pratt and Lambert 32-17, Anubis.

While the instruction booklet clearly described the use of the viscosity cup to make sure your paint is thin enough to spray properly out of the sprayer, I decided to call their customer service line. An extremely helpful technician suggested I try the paint straight out of the can before I thinned it any.  She said they have been testing the sprayer further and have found that most paints spray fine without thinning.  I did add just a tablespoon or two to my paint and had no problems.

I always try to have a cardbooard box handy to keep all my paint supplies contained when I work with a sprayer.  Trust me, it’s pretty easy to knock something over and it’s great to have something handy to test the spray.
Clean up was very easy. I rinsed the paint container and filled it with a soapy water. I also removed the paint pick up tube and gave it a rinse.
Then I sprayed the box with the soapy water solution.  Super quick clean up!

It is best practice to completely clean your sprayer when finished with your project.  All the parts easily disassemble and the instruction book is very clear on how to do this.
It’s always better to use two lighter coats than one heavy coat when spraying a piece of furniture. You want to get a nice finish without over spraying.  Here the blotches you see are really just areas of the paint that are wetter than others.

You can see from the finish detail shot, this sprayer creates a beautiful smooth finish.
There are quite a few unfinished projects to address in his office, but having this complete really  motivates me to keep going. But it’s going to take me a while before I get anywhere on his office. I need to just figure out how much work he actually does there to see if he can get cheaper business energy (a friend recommended I use someone like Simply Switch, but I know it’s still going to take me a while to sort – still it would help us out though).
